How to transcribe a press conference on deadline
Short answer
Record from the press mult or with your phone close to the podium, upload as soon as it ends, and get a timestamped transcript in a few minutes. Name the speakers, find quotes by asking questions, then listen to each quote at its timestamp before you file.
A press conference gives you an hour of audio, a dozen voices and very little time. What you need from it is usually a handful of exact quotes, who said them, and the moment they were said, so you can check them before your story goes out.
This guide covers how to get usable audio in the room or from a livestream, how to turn it into a transcript fast, how to keep track of who asked what, and how to verify every quote against the recording.
From press conference to quotes in 3 steps
- 1
Record the best audio you can get
Plug into the press mult if there is one, or record on your phone close to the podium speaker. If the event is streamed and the organizer posts a recording, download the file too as a backup.
- 2
Upload as soon as it ends
Open Dolcenota in your phone or laptop browser and upload the file, or record directly in the browser during the event. The transcript arrives a few minutes after the upload, with each voice separated and a timestamp on every line.
- 3
Name the speakers and pull your quotes
Rename Speaker 1 to the official at the podium and label the reporters you need. Ask the transcript questions like "What did the mayor say about the budget?" to find what was said and when, then check each quote against the audio.
Getting clean audio in the room
- Use the press mult (also called a press box or mult box) when the organizer provides one. It splits the podium microphone into several mic-level outputs, so you get the speaker without room noise. Plug into an output, never the input: the input expects a line-level feed from the mixer, and a microphone plugged there gives little or no signal.
- No mult? Put your phone on the podium or as close to the speaker as you're allowed, in airplane mode so calls don't interrupt the recording.
- Reporters' questions are often hard to hear on the house feed. A second phone recording from your seat catches them. Upload each recording separately: combining files joins them end to end, which would repeat the event.
- If you record in the browser, keep the screen on and the page open. Phone browsers can pause the microphone when the screen locks.
Free and built-in options
If you only need one sentence, scrubbing the audio by hand is still fastest. Some phones also transcribe on their own: Google's Recorder app on Pixel phones and Voice Memos on recent iPhones show a transcript of what you recorded.
Those are fine for a single quote. Dolcenota helps when the event is long, when several people talk, when it's in Spanish or switches between English and Spanish, or when you need to find answers fast and export a clean document for your editor.
Keeping track of who said what
| Situation | What to do |
|---|---|
| Several officials at the podium | Rename each speaker once; the name applies across the transcript, summary and exports. |
| Reporters identify themselves | Dolcenota may suggest a name mentioned in the audio; confirm it with one tap. |
| One voice split into two labels | Merge the two speakers. You can undo the merge. |
| You can't tell who asked | Leave it as Speaker 4 and check the video or your notes. |
Verify every quote before you file
An AI transcript is a working draft, not the record. Before you publish, find each quote's timestamp, like [00:12:31], open your recording at that point and listen. Names, numbers and negations ("we will" vs. "we won't") are where errors hurt most. Every export notes that it's AI-generated and may contain errors, and the transcript is not a certified record.
Frequently asked questions
How fast do I get the transcript?
Usually a few minutes after the upload finishes. It is not live; you upload or stop recording first.
Can I transcribe a press conference from a livestream link?
Not from a link. Download the recording the organizer posts, if you're allowed to, or record the audio yourself, then upload the file.
Does it work for press conferences in Spanish?
Yes. English and Spanish are detected automatically, and you can translate the summary between them with one tap.
Can I fix a word in the transcript?
Not inside Dolcenota. Export to Word or TXT and correct it there after checking the audio.
Is it free?
You can start free with 60 minutes a month. For regular coverage, Plus is $7.99 a month for 400 minutes (as of October 2026).
