How to transcribe iPhone Voice Memos to text
Short answer
On iOS 18 or later, open Voice Memos, tap a recording and tap the transcript button (quotation marks) to see the text. For speakers separated, a summary or a document, choose Share, then Save to Files, and upload the .m4a file to Dolcenota in Safari.
If you record on an iPhone, you may already have a transcript. Since iOS 18, Apple's Voice Memos can turn speech into text on supported iPhones, and for a quick personal note that's often all you need.
This guide shows how to find that built-in transcript, on iPhone and on Mac, and what to do when you need more: speakers separated, a summary, answers to questions, or a clean document. For that, you save the memo as a file and upload it to Dolcenota in your browser.
Transcribe a voice memo with Dolcenota in 3 steps
- 1
Save the memo to Files
In Voice Memos, tap the recording, tap the three-dot button and choose Share, then Save to Files. Pick a folder you'll remember, like iCloud Drive or On My iPhone. The memo is saved as an audio file, normally .m4a.
- 2
Upload it in your browser
Open dolcenota.com in Safari, sign in, tap "Upload file" and pick the memo from Files. Nothing to install. You can select several memos to combine into one transcript.
- 3
Read, ask and export
A few minutes later you get the transcript with each speaker separated and timestamps, plus a summary. Rename speakers, ask questions about the memo, and export to TXT, PDF or Word.
The built-in transcript on iPhone
On iOS 18 or later, open Voice Memos, tap a recording, and tap the transcript button (it shows quotation marks) to view the transcript. You can scroll through the text and select it to copy.
According to Apple, audio transcription works on supported models in several languages, including English and Spanish, and it isn't available in every country or region. If you don't see the button, check that your iPhone is updated and that your language is supported.
Voice Memos on Mac
On a Mac with Apple silicon running macOS 15 or later, Voice Memos also transcribes recordings, including ones synced from your iPhone through iCloud. Click a recording and open its transcript; you can copy text and search across transcripts from the search field. To upload a memo from your Mac, drag it out of Voice Memos to your desktop and upload that file in your browser.
Built-in transcript or Dolcenota?
| You need | Best option |
|---|---|
| Read back a quick note to yourself | Voice Memos' transcript is enough |
| Know who said what in a conversation | Dolcenota: speakers are separated and you can name them |
| A summary or action items | Dolcenota: automatic summary |
| Ask "what did she say about the rent?" | Dolcenota: chat answers from the transcript |
| A document to send | Dolcenota: TXT, PDF or Word export |
| A long recording, up to 4 hours | Either; Dolcenota handles files up to 4 hours and 2 GB |
Tips for better results
- Set the phone close to whoever is talking, on a soft surface.
- If the recording mixes English and Spanish, both are detected automatically, though accuracy can vary in the switched passages.
- Rename the memo before saving it so you can find the file later.
Frequently asked questions

Why don't I see the transcript button in Voice Memos?
